Should I charge more for emergency or after-hours work?

By Ask a Shop OwnerUpdated Pricing

Short answer

Yes. 1.5x to 2x your normal rate, no apology. Your nights and weekends are not normal pricing.

Why it's fair

You're trading family time, sleep, and a higher mistake rate. The customer calling at 11 PM has plenty of options at 9 AM and chose not to use them.

Be clear up front

Tell them the rate before you roll. 'Our after-hours rate is $X. Want me to come now or first thing tomorrow at regular rate?' Lets them choose, removes the bill-shock fight.
