Independent shop, should I get into tires?
Answered by Ask a Shop Owner ·
Low margin, big footprint, but it brings people in the door. Worth it?

Only if you have the bay space and can attach an alignment + brake inspection + air filter to every set. Tire margins alone are 8 to 15 percent. Attached services push per-ticket profit to healthy numbers.
The play is repeat visits, not tire profit. Customer who buys tires from you comes back for the next thing. Customer who bought tires at the big box store does not.
If you cannot get to 60 percent alignment attach and 40 percent brake inspection attach on tire sales, do not do tires. You are just moving rubber.
