My cofounder is not pulling weight. What do I do?

Answered by Ask a Shop Owner ·

50/50 split. He is doing maybe 20 percent of the work. Resentment building fast.

Have the conversation this week, not next month. Not over text. Sit down with your books open and your calendar open. Show, do not tell. Here is the work. Here is who did what. Here is what I need to change.

Come with an ask, not a complaint. Either he takes ownership of two specific outcomes with deadlines, or you restructure equity, or one of you buys the other out. Those are the only three doors. Try harder is not one of them and never has been.

Whatever you agree to, write it down, both sign. Verbal deals between cofounders are the source of most business divorces.
