How do I actually fire someone without it turning ugly?

Answered by Ask a Shop Owner ·

Never had to do this. Guy is not working out. Been coasting for 3 months and I have documented. Need to end it this week.

Do it at the start of the day, not the end of the week. Private room. Two sentences: today is your last day with us, here is your final check. Then stop talking.

Do not re-litigate performance. You already had those talks. Do not offer to let them finish out the week. It never goes well. Walk them to grab personal items, take keys and codes, and be done inside 15 minutes.

Have final pay ready per your state's law (some require same-day). Have a short written termination note dated today. That is it. The dread is always worse than the doing.
