Should I stay a handyman or specialize?
Answered by Ask a Shop Owner ·
I do a bit of everything, drywall, tile, fixtures, small remodels. Making $80k. Wondering if I should pick a lane.

Specialize. You will make more money, work fewer hours, and stop wasting drive time between skill sets. Handymen top out around $100k solo. Specialists (bathroom remodels, tile only, or fixtures) clear $150k solo and $300k with a helper.
Pick the one that pays best per hour in your market and drop the rest inside 60 days. Refer the other stuff out and take a small referral fee. You will feel it in your body inside two weeks.
The fear is what if the calls dry up. They will not. Specialists get more calls because they are the person for that thing. Being a handyman is the least memorable positioning in the trades.
