How do I quote a full system replacement?

Answered by Ask a Shop Owner ·

Feel like I am shooting from the hip on system prices. Some jobs I make good money, some I lose.

Build your price from three parts. Equipment (your cost times 1.6 to 1.8). Labor (crew hours times $150 to $185 fully burdened). Overhead and profit (add 25 to 30 percent to the sum).

That is the floor. On top, add complexity: attic work, tight crawlspace, condenser relocation, panel work. Each adds a defined dollar amount. Written in a spreadsheet, not in your head.

Present three options at the quote, good/better/best. National close rate on three-option quotes runs 55 to 65 percent. Single-option quotes run 25 to 35. Same job, same price, better presentation.
