Starting lawn care next spring, how do I get the first 20 customers?

Answered by Ask a Shop Owner ·

Truck, trailer, two mowers ready. Zero customers. Not sure where to start.

Door hangers, one neighborhood at a time. Not the whole zip code, not Facebook ads. Pick the tightest, highest-density neighborhood within 3 miles of your house and hit every door twice, two weeks apart. Route density is worth more than customer count in year one.

Price 15% above the low-baller in the area, not below. Cheap customers churn hard and complain twice as much. You want the person who wants their lawn done right, not the person who wants it done cheapest.

Every customer gets a yard sign the first week (with permission). Free advertising on the exact street you want more work on. Neighbors call.
